Since
1993, Club Infantil Sonrisas has been promoting children's events and
activities to help keep children away from violence and crime. The club was
the first and perhaps the only organization to take two girls
basketball teams to play at the San Diego Sports Arena.
At
both the events, a girls team from Mexico played against a girls team from
the US. One was as pre-game event before a game between Denver and Golden
State. The other game was a half-time event for an NBA
all-star game benefiting youth in San Diego County.
In
addition, the club has organized several events with the San Diego Padres
over the past several years. They have worked closely with the San
Diego police department and the various cities of the state of California.
The year 2000-2001 was our biggest year
ever. Under the direction of our President, Initial Pixel owner, Tamara Reed,
and with the help of Interactive Studio Multimedia, we
were able to establish our official Web site.
Literary
workshop with Teresa Gunn
Theresa
Gunn brought her Field of Dreams theater group to Tijuana and plans to
continue working with us.
Teresa Gunn in
conjunction with Club Infantil Sonrisas produced with her students of "The Street
of Dreams" a workshop of literary composition in the Centro
Cultural Tijuana in December 2000.
The Street of
Dreams is a program, founded by Gunn, to give students who are homeless
or living difficult lives the opportunity to express themselves through
poetry. The students performed original poems and songs they wrote while
taking part in the workshop..
Over 2000 people attended our January 'Día de
Reyes' Athletic Festival with similar success for our event on April 28,
2001 for 'Día de los Niños.
In April, 2001, we presented a plaque to Larry
Lucchino of the San Diego Padres thanking him for his help and the tickets
provided to take 200 children to four games at the Padres Stadium.
